Summer Ballet Technique

AUGUST:  7 (Monday) **Please note class times have been adjusted to accommodate auditions.    

  • 5:00-6:30 - Approximate Age 10-13
  • 6:30-7:30 - Approximate Age 7-9
  • 7:30-9:00 - Approximate Age 13+

AUGUST:  9, 14, 16, 21, 23 (Monday & Wednesday) **Please note ballet technique moves back to its regular time.

Ballet Technique

All Dance Classes Level Beginner through Advanced receive weekly classes in Ballet Technique.

Ballet technique is the foundational principles of body movement and form used in ballet.  Classes in ballet technique are important because ballet puts great emphasis on the method and execution of movement.

The techniques found in classical ballet are a framework for many other styles of dance, including modern dance, jazz, contemporary, lyrica and Tap.

Ballet technique is based on two fundamentals: proper alignment (keeping the head, shoulders, and hips vertically aligned) and turnout (completing movements with legs rotated outward from the hips to the toes).  Proper ballet training stresses pulling up(using strong muscles of the stomach, back and bottom to pull the body up and off of the legs, allowing the dancer to move with strength and grace.

Northstar Dance Company trains dancers in these fundamentals from the beginning to the advanced levels and reinforces good technique as the dancers grow technically and artistically.

Northstar Dance Company's curriculum is based on the Vaganova Russian style.  


SUMMER weekly classes

Summer Pilates  

AUGUST: 8, 15, 22 (Tuesday 4:00-8:00)

  • 4:00-5:00 - Approximate Age 7-9
  • 5:00-6:30 - Approximate Age 10-13
  • 6:30-8:00 - Approximate Age 13+


For strong technique, you need a strong core, and basic Pilates exercises will give you this stability.  Pilates can help with strengthening your core and reduce stress on your lower back and improves spinal and pelvic alignment.  It also helps your arms and legs move with ease, which will translate into your dancing.  As you gain more limb mobility during your workout routine, you'll have better extension and a freer movement quality.  Pilates also helps you determine which parts of your body are weak, tight, or overstretched.  Because the exercises target specific muscles and joints, they make you more aware of your body so you can work to prevent future injuries.  

Summer Intensives

Alternative Motion Project (AMP) Intensive- Once again the professional dance company, Alternative Motion Project,  will be bringing out their staff to Northstar!  This six day experience with AMP will transform students and provide them access to some of the best working instructors.  Students will be taught by today's industry leaders in classes no larger than 25 dancers per class.  Each day builds upon the next and each week brings a new instructor from AMP.  This dance experience covers technique, performance, execution, musicality, and how to explore artistry in choreography in all soft shoe styles of dance.
